A PROCLAMATION SALUTING GEORGIA'S VIETNAM VETERANS

WHEREAS: Due to the controversial nature of the 11-year conflict, many returning veterans from Vietnam did not receive the respect and gratitude they deserved for serving in our nation's Armed Forces; and
WHEREAS: The more than 234,500 Vietnam veterans living in Georgia today are part of a generation who put their personal lives on hold and answered the call to duty under a most tumultuous time in America's history; and
WHEREAS: On our State Capitol grounds and all across America stand memorials and monuments in eternal tribute to the United States service members who made the ultimate sacrifice, were held as prisoners of war, or are still unaccounted for/missing in action as a result of the Vietnam War; and
WHEREAS: Georgia's Vietnam Veterans are to be highly commended for their courage, bravery, devotion to duty, and sacrifice in a fight for peace and democracy; and
WHEREAS: It is imperative that we remember and appreciate these Georgians with grateful hearts for their contributions and sacrifices while wearing the uniform of the United States Armed Forces during the Vietnam War; now
THEREFORE: I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby extend with gratitude the State's "Certificate of Honor" for meritorious service to every Georgia Vietnam Veteran and encourage all government agencies, organizations, and citizens in Georgia to assist in holding appropriate presentation ceremonies around the state.
