Dragon Nation: Want to be a FireBreather?

1. One who faces the triumphs and tribulations of great physical opposition with an indomitable spirit.
2. An optimistic energy associated with the heart of an athlete.

Dawne Slater, CF-L1 is ready to coach you at her new ‘Box’ called FireBreather Crossfit that opened on May 1, 2016 in Jasper, Ga. Following Coach Glassman's CrossFit® model, the goal is to get you in the best shape of your life through a general physical preparedness, regardless of skill level.

It wasn’t love at first sight for Dawne when she saw the first CrossFit® rig in a local gym, but after giving the WOD (workout of the day) a try, the romance began. Now two years later, she’s a Level 1 Certified CrossFit® Affiliate with her own location, as well as competing as a team with Christy Rohmer.

CrossFit®, formally established by Greg Glassman in 2000, has grown to over 10,000 affiliates worldwide. Dawne explains it as high intensity, constantly varied, functional fitness that includes running, lifting, jumping, squatting, picking up, pulling, and is all put together in a different formats.

Currently training over 30 people a day with the majority brand new, Dawne thinks highly of the people just starting out. "To me, those new to CrossFit® get more respect than the people that have been doing it for years. It's easier to walk in when you know you can do it, but harder when you know it is going to be scaled down."

There’s a lot of jargon, acronyms, and abbreviations to learn with CrossFit®. The pinnacle is reached when you Rx’d a WOD – meaning to complete the workout as prescribed without any substitutions. The ability to do every WOD as prescribed makes you a FireBreather.

"I don't care if you Rx’d a workout or not. That being said, we check the ego at the door. We’re all in this together. We cheer each other on and doesn't matter what you look like. This is the reason why there are no mirrors on the wall. I just want to see YOUR 100%", said Dawne.

The photos, taken during a class earlier in May, demonstrate the integration of people working out with different skill levels. View video below of the first WOD upon opening.

First-time visitor Linda Jordan said, "It’s easier than I thought it would be."

Tonya Dutton has been attending for three weeks and said, "It's very addictive. Dawne is an awesome coach and great motivator."
