A Magical Time at the Summer Solstice Celebration

The Pickens Arts and Cultural Alliance (PACA) hosted their first Summer Solstice Celebration that brought together existing arts and historic preservation organizations in Pickens County. All ages joined in to learn about the various organizations, make hands-on art to celebrate the sun, have their face painted and dance to the music, which was all about the sun, on radio station WIVL 88.3 FM. Although the event was the day after the Summer Solstice, it had its own magical energy that was evident by the smiling faces of those who made it possible.

There were many activities and Director Amelia McIntyre, woman of many hidden talents, stepped right up to be the professional dancer when the entertainer didn't show. Many spent a good bit of time making Sun Catchers, including father's John Kaman and Max Kearns. KnowPickens.com office window is now catching the sun with one saying 'KnowPickens.com' by Emily Kaman, a colorful Ying Yang by Bryce Kaman and a portrait of KnowPickens.com founder Mari Livsey by Karolina Kearns. It took the efforts of many to get ready for the event and Secretary Janet Owens said, "It was worth all the hard work."

PACA was established in 2007 by efforts of Ardis McCain and with the support of Commissioner Rob Jones. It serves as an umbrella organization to aid local art and cultural organizations through workshops, fundraising assistance and promotion of their activities. The Summer Solstice Celebration was made possible through a grant to hold a workshop and it was decided to embrace all the organizations at once. Working towards this for 18 years, Ardis said, "It's happening. I just sit here and look and grin." There were over 75 people that signed a book and made comments; many stated how it was a great event.

Some participants in the Summer Solstice were Sharp Top Arts Association, Marble Valley Historical Society, Ferst Foundation, Pickens County, City of Jasper and artsmith: a pottery studio. PACA's goal is to get all these organizations to work together to put Pickens County on the map as a cultural destination. Learn more and join them at www.PickensArtsandCulturalAlliance.org.
