Update on the Assault Case from Pickens County Middle School
9/26/2013 - The Pickens Sheriff’s Office is working closely with the Georgia Bureau of Investigations on the sexual assault that was reported last week. The Pickens County Board of Education and the faculty of Pickens Middle School have also been very helpful and cooperative throughout this investigation.
We want to assure everyone that all available resources have been dedicated to bringing closure to this terrible crime. Our office has dedicated all detectives and additional deputies to ensure the case is thoroughly investigated and the students are safe within the school. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is working closely with our Investigators and is taking the lead in this case.
Due to the nature of the crime and the age of the victim, we have asked the Pickens County Board of Education and the Pickens County Middle School to refrain from releasing any information to the media or to the public. We are aware that this may be frustrating and appear that information is being withheld, but we want to remind everyone that this is an active investigation and we do not want any information to hinder the investigation. We also want to ensure that we protect the identity of the victim to the best of our ability.
In addition to their cooperation, the staff of the school has been working very hard to take all available steps to ensure that the children are safe. As the case progresses, we will continue to work closely with the Board of Education to provide a safe environment for our children to learn.
As additional updates become available, releases will be provided.
