American Legion to Honor Local WWII Vets at Spring Fling

4/20/2016 ~ by Suellen Reitz

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, approximately 430 WWII veterans die every day. At that rate, these patriotic heroes will soon only be a memory. It is always best to thank those who have served while they are still able to hear the words, and members of Post 149 American Legion are doing just that.

All WWII veterans and their guests are invited to a special tribute dinner dance in their honor this coming Saturday, April 23rd from 5:00 – 8:30 at the Holy Family Episcopal Church Community Center, 202 Griffith Rd. Those with transportation needs will be driven by legion members.
If you are a WWII vet or if you know one, please call our hotline number at 706 253-1715 for more information and to sign up for transportation. We ask that our guests bring any photos of themselves in uniform to be used as part of our table display.

Members of the Sequoyah Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and guests are also invited to come and help us honor our oldest veterans. The DAR group recently partnered with Post 149 in the recognition of our Vietnam Veterans with a Vietnam 50th commemoration flag raising ceremony. The success of the ceremony has encouraged us to plan more partnered events to recognize and honor all of our veterans.

Those arriving at 5 will enjoy cocktails (BYOB) and appetizers while sharing the "remember when" stories we love to hear. Dinner will begin at 6 and will include ham and turkey with sides and desserts brought by members. There’s sure to be many favorites shared… making the meal memorable for all. There is no charge for admission; it’s Post 149’s way of saying thank you to our oldest vets and thanks to our members for their active support.

Big Band and Swing sounds from groups like Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, and the Andrew Sisters will be enjoyed during the social hour and dinner. But a totally different sound comes as dessert…TANGO!

Elaine Thompson from Talking Rock, and her dance partner Clint Raucher from Atlanta will be demonstrating and teaching all who dare how to do this fun dance. For those not quite mobile enough (and there are many of us in that category) it will be great fun watching us newbies twist and turn. However, Elaine promises us it is an easy step and is often taught in nursing homes.
If you are one of the brave souls to learn TANGO, Elaine asks that leather sole shoes be worn. A rubber sole doest allow one to pivot well. (Do we pivot well in anything these days?)

Please mark your calendar for an evening of great food, fun and laughter, April, 23 5-8:30 for this WWII Vet Tribute and TANGO Fling. We want all of our older veterans who are able to be there. If you know any of these veterans, please help us get the word out. All we need is a good headcount to assure there’s plenty of food for all. Call 706-253-1715 and leave a message to RSVP or gain more information. Someone will get back to you right away.
