Update on Closing of the Wood Bridge in Jasper
Yesterday, the Georgia Department of Transportation provided a report on the repairs needed for the wood bridge on Chambers Street over the railroad. City of Jasper officials have found one company that repairs old bridges and seeking more to provide estimates for the repairs needed. Once these estimates are provided, they will be given to Georgia's Commissioner of Transportation to see if grants are available to help with the cost of repair. The City of Jasper is in constant contact with GDOT to resolve this issue.
The bridge was closed down on May 2, 2017 in accordance with GDOT's methods after a Regional Bridge Inspection Specialist found the structure in critical condition. The gravel was used at each entrance rather than blocking it with dirt as suggested because of runoff threat from rain. Photos of some of the damage included to the left.
