Wanted: Patriotic Citizens to Celebrate Veterans Day
10/18/2017 ~ by Suellen Reitz
November 11, Veterans Day, is a special day for the men and women who have taken the oath to serve our great nation in our military. It's a day when the citizens they serve have the opportunity to show their appreciation for the sacrifices made to keep them safe. Here in Pickens County, we have several activities planned to show that support… and we need you to make it the success it can be.
The day begins with a parade. Everyone loves a parade. The marching bands, colorful floats… it brings out the kid in all of us. American Legion Post 149 is currently accepting applications for parade participants. Show your patriotism and appreciation to our military and veterans and join us as we march down Main Street. There is no fee to participate and everyone is invited to join in on the fun. Floats, cars, clubs, horses, bikes.... we want them all! If you can’t be in the parade, we hope to see you on the sidelines, cheering us as we march by.
Line up will be at 9 a.m. behind the Methodist Church with parade beginning at 10:00. For more information please contact parade coordinator Steve Whitt at 404 387 4109 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Due to inclement weather delays, the dedication of Veteran’s Memorial next to the Chamber of Commerce in Lee Newton Park will not take place on Veteran's Day.
If you’ve not yet purchased a honor brick for your veteran loved one, it’s not too late. Engraved bricks will continue to be added to the site as they are ordered. As of print time, 275 bricks have been ordered. It is our hope that all veterans who are family members and special friends of our Pickens residents will be honored at this memorial with their name and service engraved on a brick of honor. The 4x8 Honor Brick is available for a tax deductible donation of $125. Order forms will be available at the dedication. Bricks can also be ordered online at email@example.com or through our voicemail number at 706-253-0501.
Finally, all Veterans and spouse/guest are invited to enjoy a special free lunch hosted by Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. Serving will begin at 11:30 a.m. The food is great and hospitality is even better.
Don't let this Veteran's Day find you sitting at home with nothing going on. Grab your American Flag or use one of the flags distributed at the parade and be part of our patriotic community as we thank our Veterans.
