From 1906 to 1980, this structure's purpose was two-fold: to house the county inmates on the top floor and to serve as the residence of the county sheriff or deput on the first level.

The building is owned by the County and the Marble Valley Historical Society has spent numerous man-hours and dollars to preserve the structure and place the Old Jail on the National Register of Historic Sites.

A Law Enforcement Exhibit has been installed in the Old Jail to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Pickens County Sheriff's Department. Revenue agents and other law personnel are also honored. The exhibit will continue to expand.
