Spaces still available for upcoming Horsemanship Day Camp on July 11-15
Bent Tree Stables hosts a Horsemanship Day Camp every summer for children ages five and up. The weeklong camp focuses on taking care of a horse and daily riding lessons. Other fun activities are arts and crafts, a trail ride, swimming with the horses and a Horse show for family and friends.
Vickie Crowe, Bent Tree Stable Master, runs the camp with the help of the Bent Tree staff and many volunteers. The five day camp is from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and participants spend almost two hours a day on a horse. The June camp had 11 campers that were divided into smaller groups for lessons with four on horses at a time. Beginners learn riding basics and more experienced riders learn to trot and go over a hurdle.
Everyone participates in the trail ride with the smaller children riding ponies. Along with riding, there were many horse themed arts and crafts including chimes from horseshoes and a picture frame and photo of each camper with their horse.
Swimming with the horses at the spillway is a highlight of the camp. Vickie explained that most of the horses enjoy swimming, but there are a few that refuse to go deeper than their belly.
The camp concluded with a Horse Show at the Bent Tree Stables upper arena. Many spectators enjoyed watching the camper's line dance and various drills demonstrating their riding skills.
