The Georgia National Guard Counterdrug Task Force (GaCDTF) utilized the Pickens County Sheriff's range to quality firearms on Wednesday, February 16, 2011. While waiting on the aviation team to make their grand entrance in a relatively new Lakota helicopter, the ground team worked on their qualifications and practiced other tactical drills. Several Pickens County law officials dropped by to watch them in action as well as take a brief ride in the Lakota.
The Georgia Counterdrug Task Force Mission is to "Provide military-unique support to Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies and community-based organizations throughout Georgia in support of the Governor's 'War on Drugs'". The Task Force was recently reduced to a group of less than thirty that is divided into Ground Reconnaissance, Aviation, Intel and DDR (Drug Demand Reduction).
The Task Force qualifies firearms twice a year and the PSO Range offers a 25 yard range and a 50 to 200 yard rifle range. The rating scale is zero to 40 hits and it takes over 23 hits to qualify with each of the various poses like standing, kneeling, crouching and prone, which is both legs extended behind the body with the chest, hips and knees squarely placed on the ground.
