Piedmont Mountainside Hospital hosted a fabulous Ladies' Morning Out, a morning of pampering, rejuvenation and education, on February 12, 2011 at Pickens County High School. Beautifully decorated tables in pinks and purples and an impressive buffet of smoothies, muffins, fruit and other yummies caught your eye as you first walked in. Along with that, you could hear the saucy beat of a Zumba class that was being held in the back of the room.
Women were lined up to be pampered by the booths that hosted the mini-spa treatments and hand and neck massages. After being pampered, you could take your pick of the many free health screenings, that included blood pressure checks, body mass index screenings, and glucose screenings that included a free glucose monitor. I had my bone density checked and to my surprise, I am not as bone healthy as I thought.
"Ask the Doctor" was a panel discussion that was held in the auditorium and hosted by the very charming and often humorous Dr. Randy Martin. There were two different panels with local doctors that answered questions from the audience on topics such as how to get better sleep, diet, breast health and cardiac wellbeing. Little did I know that most of us get one and a half hours less sleep than what our bodies need and there are long term consequences it can have on our bodies. This was confirmed by Dr. David R. Lesch from Piedmont Mountainside Hospital Sleep Center. He also stated that lack of sleep could contribute to lack of appetite control, metabolic syndrome, hypertension and could even result in polycystic ovary disease.
In the second panel on breast health, Dr. Allison Ward, M.D. and Dr. Eden Fleming English, M.D. spoke about the importance of a healthy diet for the prevention of breast cancer. Dr. Ward stressed that you needed to eat to get more "Bang for your Buck". Instead of one bite of a candy bar have a cup of blueberries. Dr. English stated that you need to be more careful about what and how much you put into your mouth.
I really enjoyed spending my Saturday morning with the staff at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital and everyone who was involved with this event. There was so much great information and so much fun was had by all.
