Installed in 1870, the Jasper United Methodist Church bell has witnessed numerous changes to the church over the years. These changes, though mostly expansion and innovation, include the 1998 fire that displaced the bell from its home in the sanctuary’s steeple.

The bell, retrieved from the ruins several days after the devastating fire, received restorative treatment but sustained enough damage that it was rendered ineffective as a church bell. For many years following the restoration, the bell sat in the hall outside the new sanctuary, welcoming churchgoers new and old.

In recent weeks, the bell has moved to a more permanent home, outside the front entry of the church. The bell’s new pedestal presents one of the most poignant aspects of the move. While made up of mostly new bricks, the top layer of the platform is constructed with bricks scavenged from the ashes of the old sanctuary.

The dedication of the bell’s new home will take place on Sunday, May 11th following the 11:00 a.m. Service at JUMC. From its new home, the bell will continue to welcome members of the community to the church as it has since 1870.
