American Legion Post 149 Raising Funds for Bullet Proof Vest for Jasper PD
Some officers with the Jasper Police Department

The American Legion Post 149, Pickens County has been asked by the Jasper Merchants Association to help raise $10,000 for new bulletproof vests for the Jasper Police Department.

These new vests are a substantial improvement over the current outdated ones they currently wear. The new ones are worn outside the uniform so that when situations warrant it they can be removed. The old ones are worn inside the uniform, are heavy, and in the summer months they are hot and uncomfortable.

In fact some officers choose not to wear them which puts them in unnecessary danger considering the improved vests available to most police departments.
Each of the new vests cost $750 and there are 10 officers. After a story about the fundraiser appeared in Smoke Signals and after the American Legion pledged $1,000 in hopes to have individuals and organization to match the number a $10 donation was made and a $2,000 commitment was received.

Those contributions are appreciated but more is needed to keep the officers safe. It is hoped that others will join in to help make Jasper a safer place.
Tax-deductible donations can be made to:
