MEC Off to a Great Start
126 students enrolled at Mountain Education Charter High School
Mountain Education Charter High School (MEC) is off to a great start. There are presently 126 students enrolled. Pickens Mountain Education Charter High School opened in fall of 2010. MEC is a non-traditional high school serving the students of North Georgia. We offer a unique opportunity to any student who wishes to earn an accredited Georgia High School Diploma.
MEC has 11 sites within the charter system that serve students in the North Georgia area. The sites include: Fannin, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Pickens, Union, White, Stephens, Habersham, and recently added Forsyth, Rabun, and Bowman. Since the Pickens Site opened, we are proud of our 132 students that graduated with a high school diploma.
All courses at MEC are mastery-based, which means students cannot fail a course. There are no deadlines to completing a course or any attendance pressure; however we do encourage students to attend on a regular basis, set goals for course completion, and seek out college and technical school opportunities. This past year alone, approximately $16,000 in scholarships were presented to our graduates.
The teachers and staff are dedicated to helping each individual student achieve success. Our students enroll for a variety of reasons. A student who dropped out of high school can enroll at MEC and pick up right where they left off. They may have gotten behind in school and need a way to catch up. Some students have to work during the day to help support their families. A few of our students have children of their own and have to take care of them during the day. Whatever the reason for enrolling at MEC, you will find a helpful, caring, and welcoming staff.
