6/10/2018 ~ by Sue Appleton, Jasper Optimist Club, PR Chair

The Optimist Club of Jasper sponsors Von J. Hinton Memorial Citizenship Awards each year in memory of our Charter President, Von Hinton. Von's attributes and community involvement is recognized with the selection of a student who epitomizes the good works that Rev. Von J. Hinton did in our community.

The Pickens High School senior was selected for this award by the faculty based on his being an outstanding citizen in school and in the community. Some of the selection criteria included that the student should be cooperative and contribute to the success of his/her fellow students as well as they should demonstrate that they help those in need in the school and/or the community.

The 2018 Pickens High School recipient from Pickens High School is Dalton Crowe whose parents are Greg and Leticia Crowe. Dalton's plans are to attend Georgia Tech and study computer engineering. Not only is Dalton the recipient of this recognition and monetary award, he was also a STAR finalist student and President of the BETA Club and more. The entire school and community is proud of Dalton for all he has done but also know that he will continue to make us proud as he goes onto college and pursues his career.

The mission of the Optimist Club is "bringing out the best in kids". This award along with other numerous projects involving the youth of our community helps us reach our mission. In order to provide awards and scholarships and donations to youth oriented organizations, we hold three fundraisers each year.
