Sheriff Donnie Craig Announces Bid for Re-Election


Sheriff Donnie Craig, the Republican Incumbent, formally announces his bid for re-election in the upcoming 2020 Republican primary. Sheriff Craig has been a resident of Pickens County for more than 40 years. He is married to Tina Nichols Craig, and has two children, Tyler and Ashley Craig. Tyler, and his wife Laura, currently reside in Texas, where Tyler is serving in the U.S. Army, and Ashley is currently a student at University of North Georgia.

Sheriff Craig has been instrumental in creating programs that bridge the relationship gap between law enforcement and the general public. “I am aware that my position is not a position of entitlement. I believe I have been granted the responsibility to be a servant leader within Pickens County. As a servant leader, it is my duty to listen to the needs of our community, remain a good steward of the trust given to me, look out for all citizens of Pickens County, and to build relationships throughout our community.”

Since taking office in 2009, Sheriff Craig has maintained his vision of being "Determined to Make a Difference" within our community. As the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of Pickens County, Sheriff Craig has focused his efforts on building a better relationship with the citizens of our community, as well as local, state and federal officials.

During his tenure as Sheriff of Pickens County, Sheriff Craig has worked diligently with partners thoughout the county to bring about positive changes. Examples of those changes include:

⭒ Opening of the Pickens County Animal Shelter in 2011.
⭒ Implemented the inmate labor / workforce program which includes county-wide clean-up projects, construction and maintenance projects for various departments within the county, and implementation of the elderly firewood program.
⭒ Opening of the Georgia Public Safety Training Center – Pickens satellite training campus and Pickens Sheriff’s Office Annex in 2018.
⭒ Implementation of the School Resource Officer (SRO)Program, in partnership with the Pickens County Board of Education, resulting in mandated Deputy presence in all public schools within the county.
⭒ Implementation of the Pickens Sheriff’s Office Citizen Academy, which allows residents of Pickens County the opportunity to experience, first hand, the day-to-day operations of the Sheriff’s Office.
⭒ Implementation of extensive “Active Shooter” training at local schools, businesses and churches throughout the community.
⭒ Increase in advanced training available to personnel, as well as implementation of educational incentives for employees with advanced degrees.
⭒ Procurement of equipment, supplies and materials available through federal and state programs resulting in significant savings to the tax payers of Pickens County.
⭒ Investment in state-of-the-art technology to assist in crime prevention and detection.

Through his efforts, and creation of the Sheriff’s Foundation of Pickens County, he and the foundation have made positive differences in the lives of families and children not only in Pickens County, but throughout our state. Through the Sheriff’s Foundation, more than $500,000.00 has been distributed to support charitable causes and organizations such as the Joy House, Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Homes, ACES Youth Home, funding of the Pickens County Special Olympics, 4-H, the North Georgia Pregnancy Center, Prevent Child Abuse Pickens, Angels on Horseback, the Boys & Girls Club, “Shop with the Sheriff” and many others.

Through JeepFest, the primary fundraiser held annually for the Sheriff’s Foundation, he has helped put Pickens County on the map, increasing tourism and awareness of Pickens County, all the while bringing in hundreds of thousands of dollars in funds to help those in need.
