Celebs To Get Pie In The Face For Pickens Pets
7/7/2022 ~ by Suellen Reitz, Community Thrift Store Public Affairs Officer
Everyone loves animals. Man's best friend and all... even if you don't have a pet of your own, it's hard to resist adorable puppies and kittens. Here in Pickens County, that love for animals is overflowing with the number of nonprofit agencies that exist to help our furry friends.
Pickens Community Thrift Store, located at 110 Samaritan Dr. decided to add a new element to their second annual Christmas In July Festival which will be held on July 16 from 10 am to 3 pm. They wanted to help some of our local nonprofits directly with proceeds from the festival. Something everyone could support and get behind. What better than our pets?
In addition to live music, free food, hayride and games along with fantastic Christmas decor available at rock bottom prices and of course... Santa with gifts for the kids... there will definitely be an animal vibe throbbing so strong it will surely touch our hearts.
Pickens nonprofit groups supporting animals will be there sharing how they make a difference in the lives of our future pets. Visitors will have the opportunity to adopt a pet on site. All cats and dogs will have everything ready to go... shots, spayed or neutered, and even a micro chip to keep from getting lost. Only thing missing is you. If you already have your pets, bring them along for free rabies shots.
To help raise even more funds which will be equally distributed among all of Pickens animal organizations, we originally planned to have a dunk tank and pie throwing station with minimal costs to the crowd to join in on the fun. Several known faces stepped up to face the water or pie full of cream. That idea grew to even more with a super push for donations before the festival by using well known celebrities from both Jasper and Pickens County.
Pickens Sheriff, Donnie Craig, Pickens Public Safety Director, Sloan Elrod, and Jasper City Manager, Sonia Jammes all agreed to take the hit for the cause and are hoping to help raise $2,500 for our pets. DONATE NOW TO HELP THEM!
When asked what they thought of the efforts to raise awareness and funds for our animals, all agreed there could not be a more worthy cause. Donation jars can be found in all city and county offices, local banks, the Chamber, Community Thrift Store and the numerous pet organizations throughout Pickens. If you would like to write a check, please make it out to Community Thrift Store and on the for line, write Pickens Pets.
Each of the three celebs will have the opportunity to select their official pie thrower. Sheriff Craig has challenged his staff with the promise of throwing honors to be awarded to the highest donor. The big event will take place at 12:30 pm on stage at the Festival site behind the store.
It was decided that the dunk tank might take away some of the lime light, so the plug has been pulled... at least for this time. We're hoping those who already signed up for the plunge will be up for a pie instead. Our other celebs and wanna be’s will be up for the toss a pie immediately following those on stage.
A published schedule will be available on site if you are looking for someone special to share your pies. And for those who dare, a second pie station will be set up for anyone who always dreamed of being hit in the face with a pie for a good cause.
Don't miss this great family fun community event. Bring a pet or get one there and tell your friends to join you. Saturday, July 16 from 10 am to 3 pm behind the thrift store. Help us meet our goal and even go beyond our wildest expectations. Your pets will thank you.
