'Downtown Georgia' photo contest announced by the Historic Division of Georgia DNR
Downtown Jasper, Georgia

The Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (HPD) has announced its third annual photo contest. The contest is supported by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, Georgia Department of Community Affairs, Georgia Downtown Association, and the City of Madison.

The "Downtown Georgia" photo contest seeks photos of the state's diverse historic downtown buildings and streetscapes. The annual photo contest is a special event done by HPD during May to celebrate Preservation Month. This year's theme is "Discovering Georgia's Hidden Gems." More information about Preservation Month activities in Georgia can be found on HPD's website at www.georgiashpo.org/pres_month.

Entries will be judged by a panel of experts based on creativity, choice of subject matter, and composition. Color or black and white images are acceptable. All submissions will be on view in the Flickr.com group "Downtown Georgia photo contest." The top entry will receive an annual membership to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and a copy of the photo-rich book Madison: A Classic Southern Town. Winners will be announced in a press release, on the Flickr group page, and on the HPD website and Facebook page.

Submitted photos must be taken in a historic downtown in the state of Georgia. While photos may contain people, emphasis should be placed on depicting historic buildings or sites. Many types of resources can be found in Georgia's downtowns, including courthouses, schools, places of worship, commercial buildings, government buildings, squares, parks, and cemeteries.

Additionally, photos must:
-Be 1200x800 pixels at 300 ppi (pixels per inch) or larger.
-Be your original work, submitted with a Creative Commons license (www.flickr.com/creativecommons/)

Submit your photos to the contest Flickr group at www.flickr.com/groups/downtownGAcontest/. To do so you must have a free Flickr account.

Alternatively, you may submit them via email to georgiashpo@yahoo.com, using the subject line "Contest submission." Submissions must be received by May 24, 2012 with the winners to be announced in the days that follow. Limit three submissions per photographer. Along with the photograph, please provide the following information:
-Photographer and hometown
-Photo location and description of the building or site depicted

After the end of the contest, the top photographs will be chosen by our panel of experts. To keep track of the contest visit the Flickr group at www.flickr.com/groups/downtownGAcontest/.
